Sony Nextorage Showcases PCIe 5.0 SSD, Steps into the SSD Market
About a year ago, Sony introduced the Nextorage SSD brand for its PlayStation 5 console. Now, Sony Nextorage is preparing to enter the enthusiast-level drive arena, specifically mainstream client-class SSDs. At the Tokyo Game Show, the company showcased three products (1TB, 2TB, 4TB) for PCs (most of which can still be installed in a PC), with the lineup clearly headlined by its 1TB and 2TB SSDs featuring the PCIe 5.0 x4 interface.
The Sony Nextorage M2-2280 SSD with the PCIe Gen 5 x4 interface is quite striking, boasting read speeds of up to 9500 MB/s and peak write speeds of up to 8,500 MB/s (primarily determined by the SLC cache of modern mainstream SSDs). If this SSD can achieve these speeds in real life, it will stand out among the vast majority of drives.
The peak performance of Sony Nextorage SSD drives with the PCIe Gen5 interface depends on the speed of the 3D NAND SSD platform they use and the company's ability to acquire suitable chips.
Sony's Nextorage division showcased a drive for high-end PCs at the Tokyo Game Show. It also displayed the upcoming entire product family, which includes a 4TB SSD. While it's not uncommon for a typical OEM to showcase an SSD product catalog, in this case, it may signal the electronics giant's commitment to the storage field. Therefore, considering the brand owner, the PlayStation 5 drive remains the most important gem in Nextorage's crown, and Sony may soon push SSD drives into the mainstream PC market.
Although we don't know when these SSDs will be released and available to consumers, the FixmyData team looks forward to seeing the new Sony Nextorage M2-2280 SSD with the PCIe Gen 5 x4 interface and is already prepared to assist its PC owners with their data recovery needs.
